Pre-Camp Reminders for Parents and Scouts

Dear parents and scouters,

Please take a few moments to read the following valuable information/tips in regard to Summer Camp. Click "Read More" for the full text from Mr. Atlas.

A few reminders in preparation of Summer Camp 2010:

For emergencies, the camp phone number is (401) 539-2311

For mail, the camp address is:

Yawgoog Scout Reservation
61 Camp Yawgoog Road
Rockville, RI 02873
Attn: (Scout Name)
Oak Ridge Campsite, TP

Our Parent’s Night is Wednesday, and begins at 6:30 PM. There will be scouts posted at the main gate to direct you to the authorized parking area. Please follow their direction! Please DO NOT drive through camp! Also, your help in bringing a baked goodie for our traditional dessert table is appreciated. Parent’s night will end promptly at 9:00 PM.

Occasionally, our 1st-year scouts (and their Scoutmaster) experience a little homesickness. This may manifest itself with certain symptoms; stomach distress, headaches, etc. If your son calls home and seems upset and tries to talk you into bringing him home, please resist the temptation to rescue him. Instead, call the above number and leave a message for me to call you. Many times, a scout will not share his feelings with the leaders before calling you. We do keep an eye out for the classic symptoms, and they usually kick in the second night. By the end of Day #3, the feelings diminish. We have dealt with dozens of instances of the “1st-year camper blues”, and 95% of the time we handle it successfully at camp. If a scout goes home before week’s end, many times it spells the end of his involvement in Scouting. Please assist us in solving it over the phone, if possible.

If your son has medication in his possession, I need to be aware of the type, dosage, and frequency in writing, before you leave tonight. Also any recent illnesses, injuries, stitches, sprains, broken bones, infections, etc. need to be brought to our attention.

If you plan to be away for an extended period (overnight), I need an emergency phone number and contact address for 24/7 contact. Please try to check your answering machines regularly.

Next Sunday, the Chief Yawgoog Chicken Barbeque begins at 11:00 AM. If you have not yet made reservations and wish to attend, you must call the camp NO LATER THAN Wednesday at 5:00 PM. Ideally, you should stop by the office on your way out tonight and make the arrangements.

Please do not plan on taking your son out of camp until after the Dress Parade and Closing Ceremonies have concluded on Sunday. He is part of a team, and the team needs him to be there until the end. Thank you.

Yours in Scouting,
John Atlas
